Kyul-soo Kim

KimKyulSoo explores human existence and the meaning of “home” in an age marked
by loss.

For him, home is more than a physical space—it is an inner place where memory and presence reside.

He collects and reconstructs discarded materials, revealing traces of time and life embedded in them. Through this process, objects gain new narratives and transform into living presences.

This labor-intensive practice highlights the essence of work and the significance it carries.

His art evokes reflection on fragmented lives and lost spaces, prompting us to reconsider the places and relationships we inhabit.

Ultimately, his work invites viewers to contemplate memory, existence, and the idea of a home to return to.

Critic’s Text

Labor and Effect—or, alternatively, the effect of labor—has been the central theme that artist Kim Kyulsoo has persistently and consistently explored since the beginning of his artistic practice.

While some forms of abstract art operate without a clearly defined subject, most artistic practices are grounded in a conceptual framework that both encapsulates and supports the work. In this sense, a theme functions as a kind of intellectual foundation, offering a lens through which the work can be understood.

Such a theme may also be considered a question that must be addressed through the medium of art itself. If so, what kind of significance does the artist embed within this idea? Does it carry a deeper implication, or even a logic of practice that unfolds through his work?
